Das Licht in der Laguna
Originally conceived for Verdi's I Due Foscari by Opera St Moritz and Opera Basel, Das Licht in der Laguna is a monumental 22-metre, five-part tapestry series that reflects on Venice's historical gravitas and ecological fragility. Executed entirely by hand using traditional needle-felting techniques, the work translates the ephemeral qualities of water, air and light into textured wool surfaces.
Two later panels extend the narrative: the winged lions invoke Venice's civic iconography, while also paraphrasing the date of the Acqua Alta MO.S.A. project.
The depiction of the Moorish boy being consumed by the griffin gestures towards the human cost of ecological degredation and forced migration—phenomena deeply entangled in today's global realities. The series situates Venice as both cultural emblem and site of ongoing transformation.
